How to set up IPTV on a MAG box
By the IPTV Gold editorial team · How we write and test
Quick answer Last updated:
To set up IPTV on a MAG box, send us its MAC address (printed on the sticker underneath, starting 00:1A:79), wait for our confirmation, then open Settings → Servers → Portals, enter a portal name and the portal URL we send, save and reboot. The channel list and guide load on their own.
What you need for a MAG setup
- A MAG box: MAG 322 or 324 for Full HD, MAG 424 or 524 for 4K. The w-suffix versions have Wi-Fi built in; the others need an Ethernet cable.
- The remote that came with it, with working batteries. Typing a URL with a weak remote is no fun.
- The box’s MAC address, which you send to us before anything else. Ordering for the first time? Mention the MAC in your free trial request for a MAG box.
- Our portal URL, which arrives once the MAC is registered.
- Internet speed: about 10 Mbps for Full HD and 25 Mbps for 4K on the 424 or 524.
- An HDMI cable to the TV. Use a 4K-capable HDMI port on the TV for the 424 and 524.
Find your MAG box’s MAC address
Flip the box over. The sticker on the bottom lists the model, a serial number and the MAC address, written as six pairs of characters like 00:1A:79:XX:XX:XX. On a box that’s already running, open Settings and look for Device info (some firmware calls it System information or Status).
Read it carefully. A MAC address only uses the digits 0 to 9 and the letters A to F, so there’s never a letter O or an I in it. Mixing up 8 and B, or 0 and D, is the most common reason a registration fails. A clear photo of the sticker, sent with your order, avoids the problem entirely.
Set up the MAG portal in 7 steps
MAG boxes don’t use an app. Everything happens in the box’s own settings, and the portal does the rest. The menu names below are the ones most recent MAG firmware uses; older firmware labels the same screens a little differently, so pick the closest match.
-
Step 1: Send us the box’s MAC address
Add the MAC address to your order or trial request, or send it to our support team along with the model number. We register it on our portal, which is what allows the box to connect.
-
Step 2: Wait for our confirmation and the portal URL
Registration usually takes 10 to 30 minutes. Our reply contains the portal URL to enter on the box. Don’t enter anything before it arrives, or the portal may reject the box until you reboot.
-
Step 3: Connect the box and switch it on
Plug in the HDMI cable and, ideally, an Ethernet cable from your router. Power the box on and let it boot to its home or portal screen. Wi-Fi models (322w1, 324w2, 424w3, 524w3) can join your network from the network settings instead.
-
Step 4: Open Settings → Servers → Portals
From the home screen, choose Settings, then Servers, then Portals. On older firmware the same menu sits under System settings. You’ll see fields for Portal 1 name and Portal 1 URL.
-
Step 5: Enter the Portal 1 name and URL
Give Portal 1 any name you like, such as IPTV Gold. In Portal 1 URL, type the address exactly as we sent it, including the http:// at the start and any characters at the end such as /c/. Leave Portal 2 empty.
-
Step 6: Save and reboot
Press OK or Save, back out of the menu, and choose the option to reboot or restart the portal. If you can’t find it, unplug the power for ten seconds and plug it back in.
-
Step 7: Let the portal load for the first time
The box downloads the channel list and program guide, which can take a minute or two. The portal menu then appears with live TV and on-demand sections, ready to browse with the remote.
MAG models compared
Every model in this table works with our portal. The difference that matters most is the maximum resolution: only the 424 and 524 can show the 4K group as 4K.
| Model | Max resolution | HEVC (H.265) | Wi-Fi | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| MAG 322 / 322w1 | Full HD (1080p) | Yes | Built in on the w1 version | HD viewing on a budget; most channels look great |
| MAG 324 / 324w2 | Full HD (1080p) | Yes | Built in on the w2 version | A newer Full HD model for HD viewing |
| MAG 424 / 424w3 | 4K (2160p) | Yes | Built in on the w3 version | Our 4K group on a 4K TV |
| MAG 524 / 524w3 | 4K (2160p) | Yes | Built in on the w3 version | The newest model; best choice for 4K sports and films |
Alternatives to a MAG box
MAG boxes are reliable and simple, but they’re limited to the portal. If yours is ageing or you want a different guide, these are the honest alternatives.
Formuler box with MYTVOnline 3
Pros: it can use the same MAC-based portal method, so the experience feels familiar, and it also accepts Xtream Codes logins. Being Android, it runs other apps too. Cons: it costs more than a MAG, and the extra options mean more menus to learn.
Android TV box with TiviMate
Pros: a cable-style guide grid and features like recording with TiviMate’s premium version. Our guide to Android TV boxes and Formuler covers the details. Cons: no portal mode, and premium features are a separate purchase from the app developer.
Fire TV Stick
Pros: inexpensive and small enough to sit behind the TV. Cons: it relies on Wi-Fi unless you add an adapter, and installation takes a few extra steps compared with a MAG.
Best MAG settings for smooth playback
- Time zone: set it in the date and time settings. Newfoundland, Atlantic, Eastern, Central, Mountain and Pacific all need the right zone, or guide listings and catch-up land at the wrong hour.
- Video output: pick the resolution your TV supports and a 60 Hz output, which matches North American broadcasts. On the 424 and 524, try automatic frame-rate switching if your firmware offers it.
- Buffer: the portal’s own settings page usually has a playback or buffer option. A slightly larger buffer adds a moment to channel changes but hides short dips in your connection.
- Decoder: MAG boxes always decode in hardware, so there’s nothing to switch. If one channel stutters while others are fine, it’s that stream, not the box.
- Guide refresh: the portal keeps the EPG up to date for you. If listings look stale or stop after a day or two, a reboot makes the box fetch fresh guide data.
- Firmware: check for a software update in the settings every few months. Updates fix playback bugs and keep the portal compatible.
- Wired connection: use Ethernet whenever the router is within reach. It’s the simplest way to keep 4K steady on a 424 or 524.
MAG error messages and fixes
MAG boxes show short, blunt error messages. Here’s what each one usually means and the order to try fixes in.
| Error or symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| "STB is blocked" | The MAC isn’t registered yet, was registered with a typo, or the box tried to connect before activation finished | Confirm the MAC we have on file matches the sticker, wait for our confirmation, then reboot |
| "Authorization failed" or "Authentication failed" | A mistyped portal URL, an expired plan, or a MAC that doesn’t match our records | Re-enter the portal URL character by character and check that your plan or trial is still active |
| Stuck on the loading portal screen | No network connection, a wrong URL, or a router that needs a restart | Check the Ethernet light on the box, run the network test in settings, re-enter the URL and restart the router |
| Channel list loads but one channel won’t play | That stream is temporarily down | Try the HD or 4K version of the same channel and let us know which one failed |
| Guide times are off by an hour or more | The time zone on the box is wrong | Set your zone in the date and time settings: Eastern for Ontario and Québec, Pacific for BC, Mountain for Alberta |
| No picture on the TV at all | The TV is on the wrong input or the output resolution is too high for it | Check the TV source, try another HDMI port, and set a lower output resolution in the video settings |
| Remote stops responding | Weak batteries or something blocking the infrared sensor | Replace the batteries and clear the line of sight to the front of the box |
Errors that keep coming back after a reboot are almost always a registration detail we can check from our side. Message us with the MAC address and the exact wording on screen. MAG box questions
Why does my MAG box’s MAC address start with 00:1A:79?
That’s Infomir’s manufacturer prefix, and every genuine MAG box shares it. Only the last six characters are unique to your box. If the number you’re reading doesn’t start with 00:1A:79, you’re probably looking at the serial number on the sticker instead, so look for the line labelled MAC.
Can I move my subscription to a new MAG box?
Yes. Send us the MAC address of the new box through the contact page, and we’ll move the registration over. Then enter the same portal URL on the new box. The old box stops connecting once the switch is made.
Can a MAG 322 play the 4K channels?
No. The MAG 322 and 324 output Full HD at most. They decode HEVC, so the Full HD versions of our channels look sharp, but you need a MAG 424 or 524 and a 4K TV to watch the 4K group in full resolution.
Do I need to install an app on a MAG box?
No. MAG boxes connect straight to our portal, which supplies the menus, the channel list, the program guide and the on-demand sections. All you enter is the portal URL. That simplicity is the main reason people keep using MAG boxes.
