How to set up IPTV on a Firestick

By the IPTV Gold editorial team · How we write and test

Quick answer Last updated:

To set up IPTV on a Firestick, turn on Developer Options, install Downloader from the Amazon Appstore, allow it to install unknown apps, then use it to add IPTV Smarters Pro or TiviMate from the link we send. Sign in with your Xtream Codes login and you’re watching in about 5 minutes.

What you need before you start

Fire TV Stick 4K Select owners

This model runs Amazon’s Vega OS rather than the Android-based Fire OS, and it can’t install apps from outside the Appstore. The steps below won’t work on it. A Fire TV Stick 4K Max, or any device in our other guides, will.

Install IPTV on your Firestick in 7 steps

Amazon renames menus now and then. If a label on your screen differs slightly, pick the closest match; the order of the steps stays the same.

  1. Step 1: Keep your login and download link handy

Open the activation message we sent and leave it on your phone screen. You’ll copy three Xtream Codes fields (server URL, username, password) and the player download link, so it helps to read them without leaving the TV.

  2. Step 2: Turn on Developer Options

Go to Settings → My Fire TV → About. Highlight your device name (Fire TV Stick 4K Max, for example) and press the select button 7 times, until a message says you’re already a developer. Press Back and Developer Options now sits under My Fire TV.

  3. Step 3: Install Downloader by AFTVnews

On the home screen, open Find → Search, type Downloader and choose the orange app published by AFTVnews. Select Get or Download. It’s free and comes straight from the Amazon Appstore.

  4. Step 4: Allow Downloader to install apps

Go back to Settings → My Fire TV → Developer Options → Install unknown apps and switch Downloader to On. Older Fire OS versions show a single Apps from Unknown Sources toggle instead; turn that on.

  5. Step 5: Download your IPTV player

Open Downloader, allow file access if it asks, and type the player link from our message into the address box exactly as written. Select Go, wait for the download, then choose Install. When it’s done, pick Delete on the next screen to remove the installer and save space.

  6. Step 6: Sign in with your Xtream Codes details

In IPTV Smarters Pro, choose Login with Xtream Codes API. In TiviMate, choose Add playlist → Xtream Codes. Enter a name of your choice, then your username, password and server URL, keeping the http:// prefix and any port number.

  7. Step 7: Let it load, then move the app to your top row

The first sync pulls in channels, on-demand titles and the program guide, which can take a couple of minutes on a Lite. Then open Your Apps, highlight the player, press the menu button (three lines) and choose Move so it sits on your home row.

We don’t print Downloader shortcut codes on this page because they change. The link in your activation message always points to the current version, and our support team can resend it any time.

Which player to choose on Fire TV

Both players we link to are free to download. They look different, and that’s mostly what decides it for people.

TiviMate

TiviMate feels the most like a cable box. The guide is a scrolling grid, the channel list stays visible while you browse, and the layout will feel familiar to anyone coming from a Bell or Rogers receiver. It handles our large lineup well on a 4K Max.

Pros: the cleanest program guide on Fire TV, plus favourites, reorderable groups and auto frame rate for sports. Cons: many of those extras, along with catch-up, recording and multiple playlists, sit in the premium version, which you buy from the developer through the TiviMate Companion app on an Android phone. That fee goes to the developer, not to us.

IPTV Smarters Pro

Smarters splits everything into big tiles: Live TV, Movies, Series and Catch-up. It’s the easiest to learn and a good fit for households where several people share one remote.

Pros: free, simple, and on-demand titles are easy to browse with posters and descriptions. Cons: its guide view is plainer than TiviMate’s, and scrolling through thousands of channels is slower unless you build a favourites list early.

XCIPTV

XCIPTV is a lighter third option that also takes Xtream Codes details. Pros: quick to load, small on storage, handy on a Lite. Cons: the menus are busier and take some getting used to. Ask us for the link if you want to try it alongside the others.

Best Fire TV settings for smooth playback

Clear the cache and free up storage

A stick that ran fine for months and suddenly stutters is usually low on space. Program guides and posters pile up in the cache. Here’s the clean-up routine we suggest every few weeks:

  1. Open Settings → Applications → Manage Installed Applications and select your player.
  2. Choose Clear cache. Don’t choose Clear data, which erases your login and favourites.
  3. Uninstall apps you never open. Each one takes space and some run in the background.
  4. In Downloader’s Files section, delete any installer files left from earlier downloads.
  5. Restart the stick: Settings → My Fire TV → Restart, or hold Select and Play/Pause together for about 5 seconds.

Wi-Fi or Ethernet on a Firestick?

Fire TV sticks have no network port, so most people stream over Wi-Fi. That’s fine for HD if the stick has a clear signal. Use the short HDMI extender that comes in the box: it moves the stick out from behind the TV, where the panel blocks the signal. Then join your router’s 5 GHz network rather than the 2.4 GHz one.

For 4K, or if your router is two rooms away, a wired connection is worth it. Amazon sells an Ethernet adapter that sits between the stick and its power supply, and third-party versions exist too. The Fire TV Cube has an Ethernet port built in. Once wired, open the network settings and confirm the stick shows as connected by Ethernet.

Firestick troubleshooting

Most problems on Fire TV come down to one of these seven. Work down the table before you reinstall anything.

Common Fire TV IPTV problems and their fixes.

Developer Options or Install unknown apps is missing The developer menu is hidden by default on newer Fire OSRepeat the 7 clicks on the device name under My Fire TV → About, then press Back once
Downloader says "App not installed" or "parse error" The file didn’t finish downloading, or storage is nearly fullFree up space, retype the link carefully and download again
Login refused right after you press Add user A typo in the server URL, a wrong letter case in the username, or an expired trialRetype every field; usernames and passwords are case-sensitive. Check that the URL starts with http://
Channels work but the guide is blank The EPG hasn’t downloaded yet, or the Fire TV time zone is wrongRefresh the EPG inside the app, then check Settings → Preferences → Time Zone
Buffering every evening Busy 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi or a stick hidden behind the TVJoin the 5 GHz network, fit the HDMI extender from the box, or add an Ethernet adapter
4K channels show a black screen or play in HD A Fire TV Stick Lite (Full HD only) or a TV port without 4K supportUse the FHD version of the channel on a Lite; on a 4K stick, move to the TV’s 4K HDMI port
Player crashes after a Fire OS update Stale cache left over from the old versionClear the app’s cache, restart the stick, and reinstall from our link if it still crashes

Firestick IPTV questions

Is Downloader safe to install on a Firestick?

Downloader is a free app published by AFTVnews and listed in the Amazon Appstore, so the app itself is fine. It simply fetches files from web addresses you type. The risk comes from what you point it at, which is why we only ask you to enter the player link from our own activation message.

Why can’t I find TiviMate or IPTV Smarters in the Amazon Appstore?

Many IPTV players aren’t listed in Amazon’s store in Canada, or only appear in older versions. That’s the reason the guide uses Downloader: it installs the current release from the link we provide, and the player then updates the same way whenever we send a new link.

Does this guide work on the Fire TV Stick 4K Select or a Fire TV smart TV?

Fire TV smart TVs, such as the Omni and Fire TV Edition sets, run Fire OS, so the same steps apply. The Fire TV Stick 4K Select is different: it runs Amazon’s newer Vega OS, which doesn’t accept apps from outside the Appstore. On that model, use another device from our full list of setup guides.

Can a Fire TV Stick Lite play the 4K channels?

No. The Lite outputs Full HD at most, so 4K streams either won’t start or will struggle. Every 4K channel also has an HD or FHD version in the lineup, and those look sharp on a Lite. If 4K matters to you, the Fire TV Stick 4K Max or Fire TV Cube are the better Fire TV choices.
