How to set up IPTV on iPhone and iPad
By the IPTV Gold editorial team · How we write and test
Quick answer Last updated:
To set up IPTV on an iPhone or iPad, search the App Store for an IPTV player such as GSE Smart IPTV, IPTVX or Smarters Player Lite, install it, then add your Xtream Codes login (server URL, username and password) or M3U link. Channels load in about a minute, and you can AirPlay them to a TV.
What you need on iPhone or iPad
- An iPhone or iPad on a recent system version. iOS or iPadOS 15 and newer covers most current players, but each App Store listing shows its own minimum. Check yours under Settings → General → About.
- An Apple Account signed in to the App Store.
- Your login: the Xtream Codes details, or the M3U link and XMLTV guide link for players that don’t support Xtream. You can get both through the one-day free trial within 10 to 30 minutes.
- A steady connection: about 5 Mbps for HD on a phone screen and 25 Mbps for 4K on an iPad Pro or over AirPlay to a 4K TV.
- Optional: an Apple TV or an AirPlay-compatible smart TV for watching on the big screen.
Set up an IPTV player on iPhone and iPad in 6 steps
Menus differ from app to app, but every player we recommend follows this order. The whole thing usually takes less time than finding the remote.
-
Step 1: Open your login on the same iPhone or iPad
This is the one setup where you can copy and paste. Open the email or Live Chat message with your account details, and press and hold each field (server URL, username, password) to copy it when the app asks.
-
Step 2: Search the App Store for a player
Search the App Store for GSE Smart IPTV, IPTVX or Smarters Player Lite. Check the developer name, the date of the last update and the in-app purchase notes on the listing before you tap Get.
-
Step 3: Open the app and start a new playlist
Look for a plus sign, an Add Playlist button or a menu entry named Xtream Codes or Xtream API. Choose the Xtream option if it’s offered. Pick M3U only if the app has no Xtream login.
-
Step 4: Paste the server URL, username and password
Paste each field from our message. Then check two things iOS likes to change: a capital letter added to the start of the username by auto-capitalisation, and a space at the end of a pasted line. Either one causes a failed login.
-
Step 5: Allow local network access if prompted
Players that support AirPlay or casting ask permission to find devices on your local network. Allow it if you plan to watch on a TV. You can change your mind later under Settings → Privacy & Security → Local Network.
-
Step 6: Load the channels and pick favourites
The first sync takes about a minute on Wi-Fi. Open a Canadian news channel to confirm it plays, then mark the channels you watch most as favourites so they sit at the top of the list.
Xtream Codes or M3U on iOS?
Use Xtream Codes whenever the app offers it. It fetches live channels, movies, series and the guide in one go, and it updates when the lineup changes. An M3U link works in more apps, but it only carries the channel list; you then add the XMLTV link separately so the guide fills in.
Both contain your password in some form. Don’t share screenshots of either, and if you think someone else has your M3U link, ask us for fresh details.
App Store players compared
App Store listings change. Developers rename apps, change prices or withdraw them, so search for the names below rather than following old links, and read the latest reviews on the listing.
GSE Smart IPTV
One of the longest-running IPTV players on iOS. It handles Xtream Codes and M3U, shows a program guide, and can send streams to an Apple TV or a Chromecast. Pros: flexible, with several playback options when a stream misbehaves. Cons: the interface is crowded, and some features sit behind an in-app purchase.
IPTVX
IPTVX looks and behaves like an Apple app, with large artwork and a clean guide. It’s also available on Apple TV and Mac, handy if you want the same player everywhere. Pros: the most polished design here, smooth scrolling through long lists. Cons: the full feature set needs a purchase, so check the current terms on the listing.
Smarters Player Lite
The iOS edition of IPTV Smarters. If someone in your home already uses Smarters on a Firestick, the layout will feel familiar. Pros: free, a simple Xtream login and clear Movies and Series sections. Cons: the guide view is basic, and browsing thousands of channels takes more taps.
Watch on your TV with AirPlay
AirPlay works with an Apple TV and with many recent Samsung, LG and Sony smart TVs that support AirPlay 2.
- Connect your iPhone or iPad to the same Wi-Fi network as the TV or Apple TV.
- Start a channel, then tap the AirPlay icon in the player (a rectangle with a triangle at the bottom).
- Choose your TV. The stream moves to the TV and your phone becomes a remote, so you can lock it and save battery.
- No AirPlay icon? Open Control Centre and tap Screen Mirroring instead. It copies your whole screen, so quality is lower and the phone must stay awake.
If you mostly watch on one TV, a dedicated app is better than AirPlay. See our Apple TV 4K player guide for the tvOS versions of these apps.
Best iOS settings for smooth playback
- Screen lock: most players keep the screen awake while a channel is playing. If yours dims, raise Settings → Display & Brightness → Auto-Lock while you watch.
- Background audio and picture-in-picture: check the player’s settings for a background playback option, and turn on Settings → General → Picture in Picture → Start PiP Automatically to keep the game in a corner while you reply to messages.
- Kids and the screen: Guided Access (Settings → Accessibility) locks the iPad into the player app. Triple-click the side or top button to start it.
- Playback engine and buffer: iPhones decode video in hardware, so there’s no decoder switch to fiddle with. If the app offers a buffer setting or a choice of player engines, those are the controls to try when a channel freezes.
- Guide refresh: set it to once a day. Refreshing more often uses data and battery for no gain.
- Low Power Mode: turn it off for 4K on an iPad, since it can reduce performance. Under Settings → Cellular (Mobile Data on some language settings), you can also block a player from using mobile data entirely.
iPhone and iPad troubleshooting
| Problem | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| "Login failed" straight after pasting | iOS capitalised the first letter of the username, or the paste carried a trailing space | Retype the username exactly as sent and delete any space after each field |
| Sound plays but the picture stays black | The player’s current playback engine doesn’t handle that stream | Switch to the other engine in the player’s settings if it has one, or try another app |
| Video stops when you lock the screen | The app doesn’t support background playback | Turn on picture-in-picture or background audio in the player, or choose a player that offers it |
| No AirPlay icon in the player | The phone and the TV are on different networks, or the app hides AirPlay in its own menu | Join the same Wi-Fi as the TV, look in the player’s menu, or use Screen Mirroring |
| Constant buffering on mobile data | Weak LTE or 5G signal, or data saving turned on | Pick the HD version of the channel, turn off Low Data Mode, or wait for Wi-Fi |
| The app vanished from the App Store | The developer withdrew the listing | An installed copy often keeps working; otherwise switch to another player from this guide |
| M3U playlist loads with no guide | M3U links don’t carry the guide by themselves | Add the XMLTV link from our message in the app’s EPG settings |

iPhone and iPad IPTV questions
Is there a free IPTV app for iPhone?
Smarters Player Lite is free to download, and GSE Smart IPTV has a free version with optional in-app purchases. IPTVX asks for a purchase to use its full feature set. App Store pricing and listings change, so read the current listing before installing. None of these apps are made or sold by IPTV Gold.
Does AirPlay keep the 4K picture?
It can, if you use the AirPlay button inside the player and send the stream to an Apple TV 4K. The phone hands over the stream and the Apple TV plays it at full quality. Screen Mirroring is different: it copies your phone’s screen, so the picture is softer and the phone has to stay awake.
Can I watch on my iPhone using mobile data?
Yes. Any LTE or 5G connection with a steady 5 Mbps handles HD. Keep an eye on usage, though: an HD channel uses roughly 2 to 3.5 GB an hour, and 4K can pass 10 GB an hour. Most Canadian mobile plans have caps that a few hockey games would use up quickly.
Can I use the same login on my iPhone and my iPad?
You can add the same details to both devices and switch between them freely. On a 1-device plan, stop a channel on one before starting it on the other; a 2-device plan lets both play at once.
