How to set up IPTV on Apple TV

Quick answer Last updated:
To set up IPTV on Apple TV, search the tvOS App Store for a player such as iPlayTV, IPTVX or GSE Smart IPTV, install it, and add your Xtream Codes login or M3U link using the on-screen keyboard or your iPhone’s keyboard. Turn on Match Frame Rate and Match Dynamic Range for the smoothest 4K picture.
What you need for Apple TV
- An Apple TV 4K (any generation) or an Apple TV HD. The HD model tops out at 1080p. Update tvOS first under Settings → System → Software Updates.
- An Apple Account signed in, for the App Store and for the iPhone keyboard shortcut.
- Your login: Xtream Codes details, or an M3U link with our XMLTV guide link. You get them by requesting the 24-hour trial for your Apple TV, usually within 10 to 30 minutes.
- Speed: about 10 Mbps for Full HD and 25 Mbps for 4K. On a 4K model with an Ethernet port, use it.
- Optional: an iPhone signed in to the same Apple Account, which makes typing the login far quicker.
Set up IPTV on Apple TV in 7 steps
Every tvOS player follows roughly this path. Button names differ from app to app, but the fields you fill in are always the same three.
-
Step 1: Open your account details on your iPhone
Pull up the activation message we sent, on your iPhone if you have one. You’ll type the Xtream Codes server URL, username and password on the Apple TV, and the iPhone can act as its keyboard in step 5.
-
Step 2: Search the App Store on Apple TV
Open the App Store on the Apple TV and search for iPlayTV, IPTVX or GSE Smart IPTV. Hold the microphone button on the Siri Remote to search by voice. Check the price and in-app purchases on each listing.
-
Step 3: Install the player and open it
Select Get (or the price) and confirm with your Apple Account. When the player opens, look for the option to add a playlist or a new source. Some players can import a playlist from their iPhone version or a QR code, which saves typing.
-
Step 4: Choose Xtream Codes as the playlist type
Pick Xtream Codes (sometimes labelled Xtream API) when the player asks what kind of source to add. Choose M3U only if the app doesn’t list Xtream, and add our XMLTV link afterwards for the guide.
-
Step 5: Type the details with your iPhone keyboard
When you select a text field, an Apple TV Keyboard notification appears on any nearby iPhone signed in to the same Apple Account. Tap it, then type or paste the server URL, username and password. The remote’s on-screen keyboard works too, just more slowly.
-
Step 6: Save and wait for the first load
Save the playlist. The player downloads channels, on-demand titles and guide data, which takes about a minute over Ethernet and a little longer on Wi-Fi. Open a Canadian channel to confirm it plays.
-
Step 7: Turn on Match Content for 4K
Go to Settings → Video and Audio → Match Content and turn on Match Dynamic Range and Match Frame Rate. The Apple TV then switches to the right frame rate and HDR mode for each channel.
tvOS players compared
The tvOS App Store has fewer IPTV players than Android, and the list changes. Search for these names rather than relying on an old link, and read recent reviews before paying.
| Player | Logins it takes | What it does well | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|---|
| iPlayTV | M3U links (check the listing for Xtream support) | A clean, Apple-style guide that’s easy to read from the couch | Paid upfront; check the current price on the listing |
| IPTVX | Xtream Codes and M3U | Polished design, quick scrolling, also on iPhone, iPad and Mac | Full features need a purchase |
| GSE Smart IPTV | Xtream Codes and M3U | Long-running, flexible, several playback options | Busier menus that are harder to drive with the Siri Remote |
If you already use one of these on your iPhone, start with the same app on the Apple TV. Some players sync your playlist between devices, which skips the typing entirely. Our iPhone and iPad player guide covers the phone side.
Picture settings for smooth 4K on Apple TV
Apple TV’s video settings matter more than the player’s. Get these right once and every channel benefits.
- Format: under Settings → Video and Audio → Format, choose 4K SDR at 60 Hz. With Match Dynamic Range on, the Apple TV switches to HDR only when a channel is actually in HDR, so ordinary channels don’t look washed out.
- Match Frame Rate: live sports at 60 frames and films at 24 play at their native rate instead of being converted, which removes judder on camera pans. A brief black screen while the TV switches is normal.
- Decoder and buffer: tvOS decodes in hardware, so there’s no switch to flip. If the player has a buffer setting, raise it a step on Wi-Fi.
- Guide refresh: once a day is enough. Leaving the player open overnight usually lets it update the EPG in the background.
- HDMI: use the TV’s 4K HDMI input (often labelled HDMI 2.0 or 2.1) and a High Speed or Ultra High Speed cable. Older cables cause blank screens with 4K HDR.
Ethernet on Apple TV 4K
The Apple TV 4K handles Wi-Fi well, but a cable still wins for 4K sports. The first and second generation Apple TV 4K have a gigabit Ethernet port, and so does the 2022 Wi-Fi + Ethernet model. The 2022 Wi-Fi-only version has no port, so place it within clear range of the router, ideally on the 5 GHz band.
Once wired, check Settings → Network to confirm the connection shows as Ethernet. The Apple TV uses the cable automatically when one is plugged in.
Apple TV troubleshooting
| Problem | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| The player isn’t in the App Store | The developer withdrew or renamed it, or it isn’t offered in the Canadian store | Try the next app in the table; listings change often on tvOS |
| No keyboard notification on the iPhone | Different Apple Account, Wi-Fi off, or notifications turned off | Open Control Centre on the iPhone, tap the Apple TV Remote and use its keyboard |
| The screen goes black for a second on each channel change | Match Frame Rate is switching the TV’s refresh rate | That’s normal; turn Match Frame Rate off if the pause bothers you more than the judder |
| Picture looks washed out or too dark | The Apple TV is forcing HDR on SDR channels | Set Format to 4K SDR and turn on Match Dynamic Range |
| 4K channels stall on Wi-Fi | The Apple TV is far from the router or on a crowded network | Use the Ethernet port on models that have one, or watch the FHD version of the channel |
| No sound through the receiver or soundbar | An audio format the receiver doesn’t accept | Under Video and Audio → Audio Format, turn off Change Format so the Apple TV picks automatically |
| Login rejected | A capital letter added to the username or a missing http:// | Retype the details exactly as sent, using the iPhone keyboard to avoid remote typos |

Apple TV IPTV questions
Can an Apple TV HD play the 4K channels?
No. The Apple TV HD outputs 1080p at most, so stick with the HD and FHD versions of each channel, which look sharp on it. For the 4K group in full resolution, you need an Apple TV 4K connected to a 4K TV through an HDMI port that supports 4K.
If I buy a player on my iPhone, do I get it on Apple TV too?
Sometimes. Developers can offer a single purchase that covers iPhone, iPad and Apple TV, but not every IPTV player does. The App Store listing usually says whether the app is available for Apple TV and whether a previous purchase carries over.
Is Apple TV better than a Firestick for IPTV?
It’s faster, has excellent frame-rate and HDR matching, and the 4K models with Ethernet are very stable. A Firestick costs less and runs TiviMate and IPTV Smarters Pro, which some people prefer. Both work well with our service; the Fire TV Stick setup guide covers the other option.
Does my Apple TV 4K have an Ethernet port?
Most do. The first and second generation Apple TV 4K have one, as does the Apple TV HD. The 2022 third generation comes in two versions: the Wi-Fi + Ethernet model has the port, while the cheaper Wi-Fi-only model doesn’t. Check the back of the box for an Ethernet socket.
